To represent the five senses, I systematically photographed the eye, ears, mouth, nose and hands of myself and close friends. Under each print, I asked the subject to write their favorite thing to experience through that sense. I was interested in how our physical body interacts with the world around us to create our perception. From a psychological perspective sensations are the objective outside stimuli that are picked up by nerves in the eye, ears, mouth, nose and hands. Sensations then are converted into our subjective perception in the brain. The subjectivity of perception then allows us to choose favorites or least favorites. I wanted to explore if there was a connection between the form and look of the body and stimuli we prefer. In choosing my subjects, I was most interested in those close to me because it felt like seeing them in a new way. Displayed in a grid, the viewer is able to see each person as an individual but also make comparisons between the body parts. “for senses” is a new way of thinking about connection in the world through a more straightforward scientific lens.
