“Dining Room Table” is a photographic installation of still life and portrait photography. The work focuses on the relationships between objects and people in a domestic space. I photographed things that took up space in an interesting way, from the compression of a phone screen to the hard, but fragile quality of glass. I then composed these objects and my models into sculptural still lives to put them in conversation with each other. I used a combination of artificial and natural light to highlight the variety of textures and colors in the subjects. To further the visual interactions created between the work and viewers, I arrange the prints as if each were a seat at a dinner table. Once photographed and printed, the objects are somewhere between physically existing and being represented. Then, having the prints serve as place mats adds an additional layer of tension to the physicality of each object. I use the suggestion of a dinner table as a place for conversation between the photographs. By keeping the images subtle in color and composition, I leave room for viewers to form their own interpretations and experience with the piece.
