Girls Diary is a culmination of photographs depicting my girlhood and its lasting impacts on me. There is a connotation surrounding the word “diary” of being girly, biased, and unreliable at times, all which are fitting themes for this work. When displayed, photos are accompanied by notes, letters, money and other items. The tangibility of prints or papers evokes the same sentimentality of reading an old teenage diary as an adult; the range in size and material is reminiscent of a scrapbook. Using more subtle hints at femininity make the work more authentic while solidifying the memory-like feeling of each picture. I took portraits of friends from different times in my life who all represent femininity in different ways. Also included are small moments, places, or objects of solace that feel like spaces throughout my life literally or symbolically.
